Porcelain Plank DeckingLooks like a wood deck...... only better
Build raised decks with the look of real wood but without the downside. Plank style porcelain skillfully incorporates the visual features that make natural wood decking so enchanting – knots, streaks, variable grain structure, pinholes, random color variation and even weathered appearance, but eliminates all the problems of natural wood. Pedestal supported porcelain planks offer an unsurpassed alternative to building raised decks of natural wood for rooftop decks, roof terraces and plaza decking… in fact for any deck surface over sloping or uneven substrates. And especially where installation of conventional wood or steel bearer substructures is not permitted.
- cannot catch fire or burn
- doesn’t need regular oiling or ongoing maintenance
- won’t twist, warp, split or crack
- will never fade or change color
- won’t become scruffy due to scratches or marks
- won’t develop ugly stains from oil or grease
- never develops splinters
- doesn’t suffer hard to remove mold and mildew
Styles & Sizes
Archatrak currently supplies plank style porcelain decking in three sizes. All three options require far fewer structural components, tools, manpower, site preparation and installation time than building a traditional solid wood roof deck.
16” x 48” Slabs
Resembling panels of 3”- 4” wide wood planks joined side by side, our ¾” thick, 16” wide x 48” long slab style, wood look pavers are designed for quick and easy installation over pedestals, support pads or a pedestal supported rail system on roof decks, as well as for laying directly on grade over compacted sand or gravel as landscape pavers. In elevated deck applications, especially high traffic commercial applications such as bars and restaurants, steel protection plates or self-adhesive fiberglass mesh sheets should be be installed on the underside of 16″ x 48″ pavers to provide protection against the possibility of damage or break-through. See our Safety & Security page for more information.
8” x 48” ‘Boards’
Our ¾” thick, 8” wide x 48” long porcelain deck ‘boards’ are available in both simulated wood look and modern cement look. Because of their width, these ‘boards’ are generally laid over a pedestal supported array of hollow steel beams, but can also be laid as individual planks over a well compacted sand base.
12” x 48” ‘Planks’
Resembling single boards of natural wood, our ¾” thick, 12” wide x 48” long porcelain deck ‘planks’ are supplied in up to nine different ‘faces’ or surface variations to ensure a natural/random appearance. Because of their width, these ‘boards’ are generally laid over a pedestal supported array of hollow steel beams, creating a perfectly level elevated deck, but can also be laid as individual planks over a well compacted crushed rock or sand base.
12” x 94” ‘DeckWay” planks
The Archatrak DeckWay porcelain plank system comprises extra long ¾” thick porcelain planks, 11 11/16” wide x 94 ¼” long laid over a parallel array of 94 ½” long hollow steel beams, which in turn are supported by adjustable height pedestals, spaced at 24” intervals. The steel beam sub-structure simplifies installation, reduces the number of pedestals and ensures a firm and stable support structure for the completed deck.
The 8’ long porcelain planks are simply laid over the beams, each plank resting on rubber faced support heads with inbuilt spacer tabs, which are slid along the beams to precisely position the planks. The weight of the planks and their tight spacing against the spacer tabs, is sufficient to prevent any movement of the planks without requiring any additional fixing devices.
Because of their length, DeckWay planks are designed primarily for commercial applications, providing a low maintenance alternative to traditional wood planks.
Installation on Pedestal Supported Steel Beams
Since plank style porcelain pavers are significantly narrower than typical 24″ wide pavers, constructing an elevated deck with pedestals placed under each corner of the pavers and along the perimeter and max. 24″ intervals would typically involve slow installation and require an excessive number of pedestals. The solution is the Eterno/Kronos pedestal supported beam system with a parallel array of hollow galvanized steel tubing spaced 24” apart. The only basic requirement is a substrate which is solid, clean, sloping slightly for drainage and a perimeter containment such as a parapet which will prevent any sideways movement of the installed deck.
Firstly, horizontal lines 24” apart are drawn with chalk across the deck area. Then the approx. position of the pedestals, also spaced 24” apart, is marked along these lines. Pedestals along the perimeter should be placed as close to the retaining wall as possible.
Calculate the number of porcelain planks required to span the area and optimize their positioning so no plank at either side will be cut less than 4” wide.
Place the pedestals in the positions marked with chalk, selecting the appropriate height pedestal to ensure a final level surface.
Position 8′ (nom.) long hollow steel beams over the pedestal heads, with the end of each beam centered on a pedestal head and held in place with the inbuilt clips. Each beam should be checked for level as it is laid, adjusting pedestal heights as necessary using the special adjustment tool inserted in the pedestal head.
Once all the beams are level, paver support caps with a rubber surface and in built spacer tabs are placed on top of the steel beam. The caps are designed to slide along the beam to accommodate different width porcelain planks.
Porcelain planks are then laid on the support caps, sliding them along the beams to ensure all pavers butt tightly against the inbuilt spacer tabs. Any unwanted spacer tabs can be snapped off.
For a visual overview of how to install plank style porcelain decking using the Eterno/Kronos pedestal supported beam system, please see the video below. Note that although this video specifically shows the installation of ‘DeckWay’ 12″ x 96″ planks, the installation techniques here apply equally to other 8′, 12″ or 16″ wide porcelain planks.
